Position Available: Urban Garden Outreach Coordinator 

SALARY: $25,405
BENEFITS: One week paid vacation
HOURS: 25 hours per week August – May, 40 hours per week during summer camp (June-July)

About the Position
The Urban Garden Outreach Coordinator will work approximately 25 hours per week to coordinate and teach garden and nutrition education programs for public school groups and partner organizations, managing and delivering our initiatives for urban and at-risk communities.  He or she will teach informal hands-on and lecture-style lessons in the school classroom, at the Edgewood Community Learning Garden, and other gardens and sites around Atlanta.  The Outreach Coordinator will manage and promote the Edgewood Urban Farm Day Camp and oversee the camp’s daily operations.  In addition, he or she will make and maintain community connections and work with the Wylde Center’s Education Department to develop, track, and deliver the education programs.

Job Description

  • Coordinate and lead garden, culinary and nutrition education programs for public schools and partner groups in the community.
  • Teach hands-on demonstrations and lecture-style lessons in the garden and classroom to diverse ages and socioeconomic groups.
  • Create and develop curriculum and educational materials for classes with the Education Program Manager.
  • Manage the Urban Farm Day Camp at Edgewood Community Learning Garden, including promotion, developing programs, conducting registration, and overseeing staff.
  • Create and distribute promotional materials for the Edgewood education programs.
  • Measure and track program outcomes and communicate outcomes and program status to the Education Program Manager.
  • Represent the Wylde Center at meetings, conferences, tabling events as it relates to the education program.
  • Assist with education department programs as needed.
  • Write articles for website, blog, newsletter, and magazine.
  • Duties related to being a member of the Wylde Center staff.

Applicant Requirements

  • Able to work outside to facilitate hands-on learning about organic agriculture and the environment.
  • Knowledgeable of nutrition and culinary skills and able to practically instruct students on these topics.
  • Enjoys working with youth and adults.
  • Experience developing and delivering garden-based curriculum; previous experience leading Farm to School or Garden to Classroom programs preferred.
  • Prior experience as camp staff or camp management preferred.
  • Proven success working with at-risk urban communities, preferably in Atlanta.
  • Takes initiative in establishing and pursuing community connections.
  • Ability to approach a project enthusiastically and proactively achieve timelines.
  • Demonstrates honesty, integrity, and professionalism at all times.
  • Experience developing, assessing, and managing projects from start to finish.
  • Strong communication, organizational, time-management, and computer skills.
  • Self-directed; able to work independently and on a team.

Summer Urban Farm Day Camp Junior Counselors Needed!

 The Wylde Center’s Urban Farm Day Camps offer kids the chance to get first-hand experience with what it takes to be gardeners, beekeepers, and chefs as they dig into the dirt and explore the world around them.  We are looking for outstanding, enthusiastic counselors to help kids get up close and personal with how a garden works, how to grow their own food, and how to care for the environment.

 Junior counselors will assist with supervising and leading garden activities, cooking, nutrition, and environmental lessons, crafts, and many other garden-related activities for kids 5-11 years old.  Junior counselors will also assist with camp setup and maintaining an encouraging environment in which children can learn.  Counselors will be trained and will receive a stipend for the summer.

Dates: June 3-7, 10-14, 17-21, 24-28; July 8-12, 15-19
Times: 8:30am – 2:30pm
Stipend: $1500
Location: Edgewood Community Learning Garden, 1540 Hardee Street, Atlanta GA 30307.

Qualifications

  • Passionate about educating children about gardening, cooking, and the environment.
  • Enjoys working with children ages 5-13, experience preferred.
  • Minimum 16 years old by June 1, 2013.
  • Display interest in working with an urban, low-income demographic.  Previous experience a plus.
  • Responsible, committed, enthusiastic, energetic, works well individually and as a group, and demonstrates good leadership skills.
  • Models positive behavior and attitude under pressure and willing to try new things.
  • Cheerfully works outside in inclement conditions – heat, rain, insects, etc.
  • First Aid and CPR a plus.
